Print Design
Before the web, almost everything using graphic design ended up in some form of print media. A logo I created would end up in an advertisement, on a business card, on stationery, or even on signs, billboards, and brochures.
With all my custom graphic design work, I create concepts, and design always flows around that concept, especially for advertising such as slogans, copy and photography. The concepts come from research of the market and discussions with the client. Most of my graphic design work has been in the travel and tourism industry which would include hotels, restaurants, and small businesses, and also for the automotive industry including tire companies, used car dealers, and rental companies.
Most of all my printed design work has been to develop advertisements, and to create brochures, logos and stationery. I like to not only design the media for my clients, I also like to have it printed as well. I think this makes it much more convenient for my clients.
I did not start producing commercial graphic design until my early 30's, about the same time that the computer graphic industry was being born. My very first computer generated designs were actually made using the graphic functions found in Microsoft Word and PowerPoint, so I have enjoyed moving through the various programs available and seeing the progress in technology. Today, I use Adobe graphic design software to produce 90% of my graphic work. In addition, I use Flash, and 3d studio to create three-dimensional logos.
However, these are just the software tools. The creative ideas and concepts are not created by the software, they are first created on paper with a pencil. The fundamentals of commercial digital art design are no different on a computer than with a brush and canvas. In order to produce effective commercial graphic design, you have exercise the same fundamentals of balance, space, depth and form. Good commercial graphic design is not necessarily good because it looks pretty. The content or message it displays can make it great. In other words, for some graphic designs, it is only about the words. The more design elements you have, the more you risk turning off your audience.
