Photography by Bryan Sullivan

In my line of work, the camera is as much of a tool for me as a hammer is to a carpenter. My interest in photography as an art form has never changed; however, the camera and everything one can do with photography has evolved as a result of the new digital era.

I have owned many different cameras, and each has had its own characteristics. I have been shooting on various digital cameras for seven years now, but I always feel like digital photography is cheating in a way. Don't get me wrong, I think digital photography will raise the bar on what is considered quality. The beginner today with a decent digital camera can get images that only a professional could get 20 years ago.

My main camera is a Nikon D200, but my favorite camera is my 1947 4x5 Speed Graphic. No batteries are required with this camera. I still buy film locally, but I have to buy my Polaroid film on eBay. There is always some out there. I actually purchased my Speed Graphic on eBay for $160.00.

As an artist who enjoys to draw and paint, the camera is an indispensable tool. Assume you want to paint or draw a maple tree, an old barn, a blue heron - the list goes on. A hundred years ago, you would sit and study the bird or perhaps you would try to catch one, or worse kill one for a drawing study. Today, we do not have to do that. Although there is nothing like real life studies, photos are great to have when you are ready to create. When you visit my photo gallery, most of the pictures you see have been taken because I use them as studies when I want to create a painting or illustration.

At the same time, when you study drawing, painting, or illustration, you will learn some basic principles for composition, you will pay attention to details and so on. This type of training makes you a better photographer because the principles of composition, light, angle, and color are roughly the same.

When it comes to graphic design for commercial business and fellow artists, I use my digital camera. I will try to compose a concept and use my skills in photography versus purchasing a photo online. However, while there may be times that I need to purchase images online for my graphic design work, I will always try to get the shot myself.
