Function over Form
This website features the various facets of my creative work in art, photography and graphic design. My art's function is to entertain, please and inform and provoke the viewer and my form aims to do just that.
How do I describe my art?
Painting and Illustration
For starters I was trained with old school techniques and fundamentals that have been around for hundreds of years. I graduated from Art Instruction Schools in 2007. These same fundamentals of art are applicable to all forms of my art from painting, photography and graphic design. By learning the fundamentals of art I found a whole new sense of confidence and artistic freedom.
My art work is a fusion of old school fundamentals and new school digital techniques with a root purpose. My goal is to create something original which will entertain you with a mood, thought or expression. My concepts and ideas are inspired by my children, nature and people.
Photography
Film and Digital:
Anyone who takes pictures can appreciate the value of photographic art. Learning about film, the darkroom etc ( the fundamentals) will allow you to take better pictures. Digital photography is one of the best tools ever created to allow so many people to expeience this form of expression. For starters it is a lot less expensive than film and you have more control over your finshed product one you learn a few basics of the digital darkroom.
My primary subjects for photography are the same as my subject matter in my art...people and nature. However with photography I can capture what the eye does not see, such as action, close ups or macro photography, and of course share the many interesting places I seen on my travels. At the same time, I shoot many pictures for study, these pictures will include waves, nightime, plants, animals, and so on. Please take a moment and visit my complete online photo gallery here.
Graphic Design
White Space is your Friend
In many ways commercial graphic design is a very rule based art form. For me function over form are most critical. When I create a piece of art I study the light values, structure and composition etc. When I create graphic design art I have to study demographics, markets, competition, trends etc.
Advertisement, logos, brochures, websites are all great mediums to test your creative skills. Graphic design is a lot more technical than my art or photography. Often I am not creating rather trying to convey what the clients wants to see, regardless whether I think it would look nice. However on the other hand there are many clients that leave all the art direction up to me. The pieces shown in my graphic design gallery are just pieces that I was given total freedom to create and in many cases I provided the photgraphy and copy.
